The Jelly 4G Smartphone Fits Inside Your Coin Pocket

The Jelly 4G smartphone is perfect for you if you want the power of a large phone, but not the large phone.
Unihertz Jelly 4G smartphone

Unihertz presents Jelly, the world’s smallest smartphone. Built with Android Nougat and featuring up to 2GB of RAM, this peanut packs a punch.

It’s a beautiful day. Everything’s falling into place. The world is smiling. Your wife made you Banting biscuits. You love your job. There’s a promotion coming up.

Then you sit down at your desk and your tight pants’ pressure bends your phone…

They can’t wipe the smile off your face with turpentine. You closed the deal. The boss will take you to dinner. All week.

You say goodbye, hang up and push the phone into your pocket. It doesn’t fit, cos it’s the size of a brick tile and your car key’s in the way. You drop it into your shirt’s pocket.

It’s time for lunch. You visit the bathroom to wash your hands. As you bend over the basin to open the tap, your phone takes a dive…

It’s a lovely climb to the top. The weather is perfect, you’re fit as a fiddle.

The only bother is your phone, which resembles a big screen TV and handicaps you, mentally and physically.

You can’t carry it in your pocket. Your backpack is too full. You have to carry it in your hand.

You slip on a rock and our brain thinks it a good idea to use your phone holding hand to break the fall…

Not everyone likes a big phone. But small phones are relegated to the bottom-range bucket, available for a penny, featureless and all.

You want power? Buy a big phone. And fetch your biggest chequebook.

But someone’s come along and upset the apple cart.

Unihertz developed a prototype of what they call the world’s smallest 4G smartphone. They named it Jelly.

Let’s take a peek…

What’s in the box?

The Jelly package comes with a phone, charger, USB cable and user manual.

You can pick up the Jelly for $79 and the Jelly Pro for $95, while it’s still in crowdfunding stage.

They’ll increase the price once it reaches production, but it’ll still be cheaper than similar classed phones.

Hardware and feature comparison

Let’s compare the Jelly’s hardware and features to similar phones, the main criteria being phone size.

The Jelly seems exceptional, compared to the other phones on this table.

The Xiaomi is next best, but it’s much larger (even though it’s small by today’s standards).

With dimensions of 92.4 mm x 43 mm x 13 mm, the Jelly’s size is reminiscent of old school Nokia hardware (but thinner).

And yet, it has enough room for two nano SIM card slots and a MicroSD slot.

That saves you a lot of space. It also keeps your phone from getting scratched by your keys, wallet or pocket shotgun.

The Jelly comes with two cameras. The primary camera gives you 8 MP, while the secondary gives you 2 MP.

Remember, MP count doesn’t determine the quality of the picture, only the size to which the photo can be blown up before it looks bad.

If you like a phone of this size, you’ll be happy with 8 MP.

Battery life

Compared to other mini smartphones, the Jelly’s battery life seems abysmal.

It gives you up to six hours talk time and 140 hours standby.

This might be a dealbreaker for you, but if you charge your phone every day, this shouldn’t be a bother.

If you don’t like the stunted battery life, buy an extra battery or a power bank. The battery is replaceable.

The Jelly comes in three colours:

  • Pearl white
  • Sky blue
  • Space black

Unihertz creates two accessories for the Jelly.

One is an armband for fitness freaks who want to mount the phone to their body when they’re exercising.

The other is a standard plastic phone case.

The Jelly comes with a one year warranty. There are no details about what it covers.

The main concerns I have with the Jelly are typing and volume.

I couldn’t find information about these issues. I hope they’re honest oversights, not intentional omissions.

I can’t imagine typing on the Jelly being easy, it having such a small screen. Swiping with Swiftype won’t be easy either.

It’s irritating to communicate on a mobile phone if the volume is terrible.

It can’t be an easy feat to squash good speakers into such a small phone.

Final thoughts

The Jelly looks like a gorgeous mini smartphone.

For the price of an entry-level phone you get amazing hardware that does everything a larger phone offers.

It’s so small that it fits inside your jeans’ coin pocket.

Yet, despite the size, the Pro has 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, an 8MP front camera and offers MicroSD support.

Unihertz’ Jelly proves that dynamite comes in small packages.

In my opinion, you can’t go wrong supporting this project.
